Where Was It Fought?

Map game · 5 rounds · Free · 207 places

You get a name and a date: a famous battle, a siege, a campaign or the fall of a city. Find where it was fought on a world map and drop your pin: the closer you land, the more points you score, up to 5,000 a round. After each guess the full story slides out, with its numbers, its picture and a link to the article. Every game draws five rounds at random from more than 200, from ancient Greece to the Pacific.

Frequently asked questions

How does scoring work?

Each round is worth up to 5,000 points. A pin within 10 km of the target scores the full 5,000, and the score falls smoothly with distance: about 4,200 at 200 km, 3,300 at 500 km and 2,200 at 1,000 km. The hint shows the modern country (for a round at sea, the nearest land) and halves the score for that round.

Where do the locations come from?

Each location was checked against its Wikidata coordinates and against the sources cited in our own battle articles. Battles fought over a whole region, like the air Battle of Britain, are left out because they have no single point.

What is in the game?

207 battles, sieges, campaigns and falls of cities from our Field Dispatch articles, from Marathon and Cannae to Gettysburg, Stalingrad and Midway. Five are drawn at random every game.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Drag to move the map, pinch with two fingers to zoom and tap to drop your pin. On a computer you can also use the mouse wheel or the keyboard.
