Between Waterloo and 1914, rifled weapons, railways, the telegraph and steam warships transformed how wars were fought. The century saw national uprisings in Europe, the American Civil War, wars on the Great Plains and colonial campaigns in Africa and Asia. This quiz takes you through eight of their battles.
You get eight short scenes, each describing a battle fought between 1816 and 1913 without naming it. Pick one of four answers, see a short fact after each round and get a rank at the end. It takes about three minutes.
Which battles are in the quiz?
Each game draws eight battles at random from a pool of 16, so a replay brings new scenes: Olszynka Grochowska, the Alamo, Balaclava, Gettysburg, Little Bighorn, Isandlwana, Adwa, Tsushima, Blood River, Custoza, the Riachuelo, the siege of Paris, Angamos, Omdurman, Spion Kop and Mukden.
How did technology change war in the 19th century?
Rifled muskets and later breech-loaders made frontal attacks far deadlier, railways moved armies faster than ever, and steam-powered armored warships replaced sail. By 1905, as Tsushima showed, a single naval battle could decide a war.
