From 1789 to 1815, revolution and Napoleon's ambition set Europe and its empires at war on a scale never seen before. Mass conscript armies, corps that marched apart and fought together, and fleets of wooden ships of the line decided the fate of nations from India to the Gulf of Mexico. This quiz takes you through eight of those battles.
You get eight short scenes, each describing a battle fought between 1789 and 1815 without naming it. Pick one of four answers, see a short fact after each round and get a rank at the end. It takes about three minutes.
Which battles are in the quiz?
Each game draws eight battles at random from a pool of 16, so a replay brings new scenes: Racławice, Assaye, Austerlitz, Trafalgar, Somosierra, Borodino, New Orleans, Waterloo, Valmy, the Pyramids, Friedland, Montenotte, Bussaco, Maloyaroslavets, Hanau and Montmirail.
Why were Napoleon's armies so hard to beat?
Napoleon combined large conscript armies with self-contained corps that could march separately and concentrate quickly on the battlefield. Speed, artillery and the bold use of reserves let him beat coalitions one army at a time until his enemies adopted similar methods.
